Three routes
| Japanese-taught degree | Usually JLPT N2 or N1 and often the EJU |

| Research student | Contact a supervisor, then enter a master’s after a research period |
| Language school first | 1 to 2 years to reach JLPT N2 and prepare for the EJU |
After HSC
Your options are MEXT’s undergraduate route, a language school pathway into a Japanese-taught degree, or an English-taught programme. The University of Tokyo’s Global Science Course is a transfer route for students with 2 or more years at a university outside Japan; its PEAK programme ended with the fall 2026 intake.
