Japanese study costs at a glance
Worked example: first year at a national university
| Admission fee plus tuition (average) | ¥820,000 |
|---|---|
| Living: 12 × ¥105,000 | ¥1,260,000 |
| Visa (single entry) | ¥3,000 |
| Total before flights and move-in costs | ¥2,083,000 |
Later years cost less because the admission fee is paid once. Tokyo living costs usually run above the national average.
Move-in costs
Renting a flat often means paying key money (reikin) and a deposit (shikikin) on top of the first month’s rent, which can add up to several months’ rent at once. Language schools and universities often offer dormitories that avoid these charges.
