Write a thoughtful statement of purpose

Different countries ask for different documents. Write the one you are actually asked for, and keep every version consistent.

Which document are you writing?

“SOP” is used loosely in Bangladesh for several different documents. Each one has its own reader and rules.

The UCAS statement from 2026 entry

UCAS replaced the free-form statement with three questions:

  1. Why do you want to study this course or subject?
  2. How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
  3. What else have you done to prepare outside of formal education, and why are these experiences useful?

You can split the 4,000 characters however you like, as long as each answer has at least 350. For an HSC student, question 2 is where your HSC subjects, projects and any olympiad or club work belong. Do not spend the space praising the UK.

The German Embassy motivation letter

The embassy asks your letter to answer these points directly:

  • What did you study before, and why? Briefly describe the content.
  • What do you want to study now, and why? Briefly describe the content.
  • Why Germany rather than another country?
  • What do you want to do after your degree?

Use the questions as headings. A visa officer reads it to judge whether your plan is coherent, not whether your English is elegant.

Visa letters: Canada and Australia

For a Canadian study permit, IRCC asks you to describe your programme and how it relates to your academic or work background and future career goals. For Australia, the Genuine Student questions ask about your circumstances, previous study and work, and why this course and provider make sense. An unrelated career jump, or a lower-level course after a higher degree, invites extra questions, so explain it plainly.

Officers compare these answers with your admission statement, financial documents and interview. A different story in each is one of the easiest ways to create doubt.

  • Keep your visa letter consistent with your sponsor’s documents.
  • Never submit a purchased or AI-generated statement you cannot explain in an interview.
  • Save the exact version you submitted.
