Technical University of Munich: highlights

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is the highest-ranked university in the European Union: 25th in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Unlike most German public universities, TUM charges tuition to students from outside the EU, and Bangladeshi applicants face two extra hurdles covered below.

  • After HSC: expect a 2-semester Studienkolleg before you can start a bachelor’s, unless uni-assist assesses your certificate otherwise.
  • For a master’s in informatics: applicants with a degree from Bangladesh must submit GRE or GATE scores, with GRE Quantitative 164 and Analytical Writing 4.0 as the minimum.
  • Tuition, non-EU: usually €2,000 or €3,000 a semester for a bachelor’s and €4,000 or €6,000 a semester for a master’s.
  • Living costs: €1,300 to €2,000 a month in the Munich area.
  • Visa wait: the German Embassy in Dhaka reports a wait of more than 27 months for bachelor’s and master’s applicants without a German or EU scholarship.

Admission requirements for Bangladeshi students

LevelWhat TUM asks for
Bachelor’s with HSCA Preliminary Documentation (VPD) from uni-assist. Where the certificate does not give direct access to German university study, a 2-semester Studienkolleg ending in the Feststellungsprüfung exam
Bachelor’s languageGerman at university level for German-taught degrees such as BSc Informatics
Master’sA recognised bachelor’s degree in a related subject, assessed in TUM’s aptitude procedure
Master’s in the informatics familyGRE General or GATE if your degree is from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, China or Iran. Minimum GRE: Quantitative Reasoning 164 and Analytical Writing 4.0
Master’s languageProof of English for English-taught programmes; see the programme page for accepted tests

After a Studienkolleg you submit a new application to TUM in the normal period. A Studienkolleg place is itself competitive and usually needs German at B1 or B2 level to start.

TUM: yearly intakes

TUM follows the German academic year, with a winter semester starting in October and a summer semester starting in April. Many programmes, including BSc Informatics, only admit for winter.

Winter semesterOctoberBSc Informatics: 15 May to 15 July. MSc Informatics: 1 February to 31 MayAll programmes

Because of the long visa wait in Dhaka, the semester you can actually start may be much later than the one you are admitted for. Ask TUM about deferring your place.

How to apply and key dates

  1. Get your VPD from uni-assist

Applicants with a non-German certificate need the Preliminary Documentation before applying to TUM. Allow several weeks.

  2. Take the GRE if your programme needs it

For MSc Informatics and related programmes, book the GRE early enough for scores to arrive within the application period.

  3. Apply in TUMonline within the period

Upload every required document before the period ends, or the application cannot be processed.

  4. Register for the visa as early as possible

Join the embassy’s waiting list on the Consular Services Portal straight away. Master’s applicants then submit at VFS and bachelor’s applicants at the embassy.

  5. Open a blocked account

Deposit at least €11,904 before your visa appointment.

A DAAD scholarship does more than pay costs. German government and EU-funded scholarship holders are processed by the Dhaka embassy straight after registering, which avoids the long visa wait.

Living costs in Munich

Munich is the most expensive city in Germany. TUM tells single students to expect €1,300 to €2,000 a month in the Munich area, with rent as the largest cost. The blocked account required for the visa, €11,904 a year or €992 a month, is below that range, so plan for more than the visa minimum.

What one year costs in total

A year of MSc Informatics comes to roughly €27,800 to €36,200: €12,000 in tuition, €194 in student fees and €15,600 to €24,000 in living costs.

TUM: FAQs

Can I get into TUM with HSC?

Usually not directly. Bangladeshi HSC holders should expect to qualify through a Studienkolleg: 2 semesters of preparation ending in the Feststellungsprüfung exam. Start with a Preliminary Documentation from uni-assist, which states how your certificate is assessed.

Is TUM free for Bangladeshi students?

No. TUM charges students from outside the EU. Bachelor’s degrees usually cost €2,000 or €3,000 a semester and master’s degrees €4,000 or €6,000. MSc Informatics is €6,000 a semester.

Do I need the GRE for a master’s at TUM?

For master’s programmes in the informatics family, yes, if your degree is from Bangladesh. TUM asks for GRE General or GATE, with at least 164 in GRE Quantitative Reasoning and 4.0 in Analytical Writing.

Can I study at TUM in English?

At master’s level, often yes: MSc Informatics is taught in English. At bachelor’s level most degrees, including BSc Informatics, are in German.

When are the application periods?

For MSc Informatics: 1 February to 31 May for the winter semester and 1 October to 30 November for the summer semester. For BSc Informatics: 15 May to 15 July for the October start.

How long does the German student visa take from Dhaka?

The German Embassy in Dhaka reports a wait of more than 27 months for bachelor’s and master’s applicants without a German or EU scholarship. Register on the waiting list before you do anything else, and do not pay non-refundable fees until you understand the timing.
