The short version
- After HSC: most UK universities do not accept HSC alone for direct entry. Plan for a foundation year, or apply with A levels or the IB.
- After a bachelor’s: master’s programmes usually want a 4-year Bangladeshi bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of around 3.2 to 3.25 out of 4 for a UK 2:1 equivalent.
- For a PhD: rules vary a lot. Sheffield, for example, does not accept bachelor’s or master’s degrees taken in Bangladesh for PhD entry.
- Admission and visa are separate: an offer does not guarantee a Student visa.
Undergraduate entry after HSC
Bangladesh’s HSC is 12 years of schooling, while UK bachelor’s degrees assume 13, so universities usually ask HSC students to complete a foundation year first. The two universities we profile publish exactly what they accept:
| University | HSC route | Grades asked |
|---|---|---|
| Manchester | Integrated Foundation Year (science, engineering, bioscience) | HSC 80% or higher, with 80% in Mathematics and Physics |
| Manchester | INTO Manchester foundation (many subjects) | HSC overall 65% or higher |
| Sheffield | HSC plus an approved foundation programme, such as Sheffield International College | Set by the foundation provider |
| Both | Direct entry with A levels or the IB | Manchester: A*A*A* to ABB, or IB 34 to 41 |
A foundation year adds a year of fees and living costs, so budget for 4 years in total. Check that the foundation guarantees progression to your chosen degree, and at what grade.
Master’s entry after a Bangladeshi bachelor’s
UK universities convert your CGPA into a UK degree class. Most taught master’s ask for a 2:1, and some accept a 2:2 with work experience.
| University | Degree accepted | 2:1 equivalent | 2:2 equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manchester | 4-year bachelor’s from a reputable Bangladeshi university | Typically GPA 3.2 out of 4 | Varies by department |
| Sheffield | 4-year bachelor’s, or a 3 or 4-year bachelor’s followed by a 1 or 2-year master’s | 65% or GPA 3.25 out of 4 | 55% or GPA 2.75 out of 4 |
If you hold a 3-year pass or honours degree, check the rules carefully; Sheffield accepts it only when followed by a master’s.
PhD entry
PhD admission depends on a research proposal, a supervisor’s support and your previous degrees. Rules for Bangladeshi degrees vary sharply between universities. Sheffield states that it cannot accept bachelor’s or master’s degrees taken in Bangladesh for PhD entry and asks for degrees studied outside Bangladesh. Always read the university’s Bangladesh country page before contacting a supervisor.
How and when to apply
Bachelor’s: through UCAS
One application with up to 5 choices costs £34.50 for 2027 entry. The equal-consideration date is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time, and 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses.
Master’s and PhD: direct to the university
Apply on each university’s own portal. Many run rolling admissions, but popular courses and scholarships fill early, so apply 9 to 12 months ahead.

Admission FAQs
Can I get into a UK university with just HSC?
Usually not for direct entry. Manchester and Sheffield both ask HSC students to complete a foundation programme first, unless you also hold A levels or the IB.
What CGPA do I need for a UK master’s?
Often around 3.2 to 3.25 out of 4 for a 2:1 equivalent. Sheffield also lists GPA 2.75 as a 2:2 equivalent, which some courses accept.
Is a 3-year bachelor’s from Bangladesh accepted?
Sometimes only when followed by a master’s. Sheffield accepts a 3-year degree plus a 1 or 2-year master’s; check each university.
Do I need work experience?
Not for most taught master’s, but MBAs and some management courses ask for it, and Chevening needs 2 years.
