The route at a glance
Why HSC students need a foundation year
HSC is 12 years of schooling, while UK degrees assume 13. Universities therefore offer a foundation year to bridge the gap. Manchester’s Integrated Foundation Year asks for HSC 80% with 80% in Mathematics and Physics, and its INTO Manchester foundation asks for 65% overall. Sheffield accepts HSC plus an approved foundation such as Sheffield International College. If you have A levels or the IB, you may be able to enter year one directly.
Applying through UCAS
- Shortlist up to 5 courses
One UCAS application covers up to 5 choices for £34.50 (2027 entry).
- Write one personal statement
It goes to all 5 choices, so focus on the subject, not one university.
- Add your reference and grades
A teacher’s reference and your predicted or achieved results.
- Submit by the deadline
15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine; 13 January 2027 for most other courses.
- Accept an offer and get your CAS
Meet any conditions, pay the deposit and move on to the visa.
What 4 years can cost
An illustration for a foundation year plus a 3-year degree outside London, using mid-range assumptions, not a quote:
| Tuition: 4 years × £20,000 (assumed) | £80,000 |
|---|---|
| Living: 48 months × £947 (Study UK, student halls) | £45,456 |
| Health surcharge: about 4 years × £776 | About £3,104 |
| Total before visa fees and flights | About £128,560 |
Part-time work of up to 20 hours a week in term can help with living costs, but not with the funds you must show for the visa.
Bachelor’s FAQs
Can I skip the foundation year?
Only with qualifications the university accepts for direct entry, such as A levels or the IB. HSC alone is usually not enough.
Is a UK bachelor’s shorter than elsewhere?
Yes. Most English degrees take 3 years, compared with 4 in the USA or Canada, which lowers the total cost.
Can I work after graduating?
Yes, on the Graduate Route: 2 years if you apply before 1 January 2027, then 18 months.
