The short version

  • After HSC: US universities generally accept 12 years of schooling for a 4-year bachelor’s, so HSC students can apply directly.
  • Holistic review: universities such as ASU look at grades, English, test scores and experience together.
  • Tests: many undergraduate programmes are test-optional for the SAT or ACT, and some graduate programmes waive the GRE or GMAT.
  • Plan early: EducationUSA recommends starting research 12 to 18 months ahead.

Example: Arizona State University

ASU reviews international first-year applicants holistically. Its minimum IELTS Academic score is 6.0, rising to 6.5 for engineering and nursing and 7.0 for journalism, and it also accepts TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo. For fall 2026 its priority deadline was 15 January 2026.
