The Genuine Student requirement

Since 2024 the Genuine Student requirement has replaced the old Genuine Temporary Entrant test. You answer questions in the application about your circumstances, your previous study and work, and why this course and provider make sense for you. An unrelated career jump, or a lower-level course after a higher degree, can attract extra questions. Keep your answers specific and consistent with your documents.

Step by step from Bangladesh

  1. Accept your offer and pay the deposit

    Arrange Overseas Student Health Cover with your provider.

  2. Receive your CoE

    It must still be valid when your visa is decided.

  3. Run the Document Checklist Tool

    Enter Bangladesh and your provider to see the evidence you need.

  4. Prepare your Genuine Student answers and funds

    Explain your study plan and gather evidence of tuition, living costs and travel money.

  5. Apply on ImmiAccount and pay

    Lodge a complete, decision-ready application; incomplete ones can be refused.

  6. Complete biometrics and health checks

    When the Department asks, and reply to any request quickly.

  7. Wait before booking travel

    Home Affairs advises against booking travel before the visa is finalised.

Why are so many Bangladeshi applications refused?

Around 45% to 51% were refused in early 2026. Weak Genuine Student answers and unclear financial evidence are the main risks, so both need care.

How long does processing take?

Use the Home Affairs processing time guide. Recent guidance showed about half of applications decided within around 29 days, but it varies.

Can I work on this visa?

Up to 48 hours a fortnight when your course is in session, and unlimited in scheduled breaks.
