About Australia: highlights

Australia offers two intakes a year, strong post-study work rights and a large Bangladeshi community. It has also become one of the toughest destinations for Bangladeshi visas, so the Genuine Student assessment and your financial evidence need real care.

  • Rough annual budget: about AUD 50,000 to 75,000 a year, combining typical tuition of AUD 20,000 to 45,000 with the AUD 29,710 living-cost figure.
  • Money to show: AUD 29,710 a year for living costs, plus tuition and travel, as part of your financial capacity evidence.
  • Visa cost: the Student visa (subclass 500) costs from AUD 2,500 since 1 July 2026, and it is not refunded if you are refused.
  • Work while studying: up to 48 hours a fortnight while your course is in session, unlimited in scheduled breaks.
  • After graduation: the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) gives 2 years after a bachelor’s or coursework master’s and 3 years after a research master’s or PhD.
  • Visa outlook: roughly 45% to 51% of Bangladeshi applications were refused in early 2026, among the highest rates of any country.

Use the Home Affairs Document Checklist Tool with Bangladesh as your passport country and your chosen provider. It is updated on 31 March and 30 September each year.

Step by step from Bangladesh

  1. Accept your offer

Pay the deposit your university asks for and arrange Overseas Student Health Cover.

  2. Get your CoE

Your provider issues the Confirmation of Enrolment; it must be valid when your visa is decided.

  3. Run the Document Checklist Tool

Enter Bangladesh and your provider to see exactly which evidence you need.

  4. Prepare your Genuine Student answers and funds

Explain how the course fits your study and career history, and gather clear evidence of tuition, living costs and travel money.

  5. Apply online and pay

Lodge a complete, decision-ready application through ImmiAccount and pay from AUD 2,500. Incomplete applications can be refused.

  6. Biometrics and health exam

Complete them promptly when the Department asks, and answer any request for information quickly.

  7. Wait before booking travel

Home Affairs advises against booking travel before your visa is finalised.

  8. Receive your grant

Keep a copy of your grant number, expiry date and conditions, and keep your health cover active.

Work during and after your studies

48 hrs/fortnightWhile your course is in session
UnlimitedDuring scheduled course breaks
AUD 24.95/hourNational minimum wage

While you study

The limit is per fortnight, so you can work more one week and less the next. Retail and hospitality jobs typically pay AUD 22 to 30 an hour. Research master’s and PhD students often have different conditions, so check your grant notice.

After you graduate

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) gives 2 years after a bachelor’s or coursework master’s and 3 years after a research master’s or PhD. Apply within 6 months of completing your course, with health cover and the required English score.

Australia intakes and deadlines

Main intake

February / March

Semester 1 has the most courses and scholarships. Apply roughly 6 to 9 months ahead to leave time for the CoE and visa.

Second intake

July

Semester 2 is widely available at universities. Some providers also run trimesters with a November start.

Your preparation timeline

  1. 18 to 12 months before: Research courses, eligibility, funding and scholarship deadlines.
  2. 12 to 9 months before: Prepare language tests, transcripts, references and your shortlist.
  3. 9 to 6 months before: Submit applications by each programme’s actual deadline.
  4. 6 to 3 months before: Meet offer conditions, arrange funding and prepare visa documents.
  5. 3 to 1 months before: Apply for the visa and plan accommodation and arrival.

Keep these dates separate

A course start date, a Confirmation of Enrolment, a scholarship round and your visa lodgement are separate milestones. Australia Awards Bangladesh reopens in early 2027, well before a 2028 start.

English tests and exams

Most courses ask for IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall, with higher scores for professional degrees such as nursing and teaching. Your provider’s requirement and any visa requirement are separate checks.

For admission

Each provider lists accepted tests, overall scores and band minimums. Some pathway programmes accept lower scores if you complete an English course first.

For the visa

The Document Checklist Tool tells you whether you must attach English evidence for your passport and provider combination.

Study in Australia: FAQs

What is the Genuine Student requirement?

It replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant test in 2024. Home Affairs checks whether your course is a sensible next step given your previous study and work, so an unrelated career jump can attract extra questions.

How much money do I need to show?

AUD 29,710 a year for living costs, plus tuition and travel, with extra funds for any family members. The exact evidence depends on the Document Checklist Tool result for your passport and provider.

How much does the Student visa cost?

From AUD 2,500 since 1 July 2026. The charge is not refunded if your application is refused.

Do I need health insurance?

Yes. You must hold Overseas Student Health Cover for your whole visa, unless you fall in an exemption category.

How many hours can I work?

Up to 48 hours a fortnight while your course is in session and unlimited hours in scheduled breaks.

How long can I stay after graduating?

2 years after a bachelor’s or coursework master’s and 3 years after a research master’s or PhD, on the Temporary Graduate visa.

What is the refusal rate for Bangladeshi applicants?

Around 45% to 51% in early 2026, according to The PIE News. A well-explained course choice and clean financial history matter more in Australia than almost anywhere else.

Can I study in Australia after HSC?

Yes, but many universities ask HSC students to complete a foundation or diploma pathway first. Check the entry page for your exact grades.
