The short version

  • Document check first: applicants with a non-German school certificate usually need a Preliminary Documentation (VPD) from uni-assist before applying to universities like TUM.
  • After HSC: where a certificate does not give direct access, you qualify through a Studienkolleg: 2 semesters ending in the Feststellungsprüfung exam.
  • Master’s: needs a related bachelor’s and the programme’s language certificate; many are taught in English.
  • uni-assist is not admission: you still need the university’s own admission letter.

The Studienkolleg route

The Studienkolleg prepares students whose school certificate qualifies them for university at home but not in Germany. It takes 2 semesters and ends with the Feststellungsprüfung, which gives subject-specific access to a degree. After passing, you submit a new application to the university within its normal application period.
