About Germany: highlights
Germany’s public universities charge little or no tuition in most states, which makes it one of the cheapest high-quality options for Bangladeshi students. The main hurdles are German-language requirements for many courses and long waits for embassy appointments in Dhaka.
Rough annual budget: about €13,000 to 17,000 a year at a tuition-free university, combining DAAD’s living-cost range of €900 to 1,200 a month with compulsory health insurance of around €120 to 140 a month.
Money to show: a blocked account (Sperrkonto) of €11,904, released to you at €992 a month after you arrive, or a German government scholarship.
Tuition: often none at public universities, but Baden-Württemberg charges €1,500 a semester and TUM charges non-EU students €3,000 a semester for its Informatics degree.
Work while studying: 140 full days or 280 half days a year, with extra hours allowed for a registered student job.
After graduation: an 18-month residence permit to look for qualified work, then an EU Blue Card or work permit.
Visa outlook: the Dhaka embassy says bachelor’s and master’s applicants without a German or EU scholarship currently wait more than 27 months for their turn. PhD students and German or EU scholarship holders are processed right after registering.

You apply for a national (D) visa by registering in the German Embassy Dhaka’s Consular Services Portal, which needs a valid admission letter. Master’s applicants submit at VFS and bachelor’s applicants at the embassy. The file must be complete when you submit it.
Waiting time: the embassy states the wait for bachelor’s and master’s students without a German or EU scholarship is more than 27 months. PhD students and German or EU scholarship holders are processed right after registration.

Step by step from Bangladesh
Get your admission
If your university uses uni-assist, its check is only a preliminary step; you still need the university’s own admission letter.
Open a blocked account
Deposit €11,904 with an approved provider so you can draw €992 a month after arrival.
Buy travel health insurance
Cover from your arrival date until you enrol, for at least 3 months.
Register in the Consular Services Portal
Answer the questionnaire and upload your documents. You then wait for the embassy’s email: master’s students get a VFS booking link, bachelor’s students a document request and appointment.
Prepare your file in the embassy’s order
Bring originals and clear A4 copies, with English or German translations of any Bengali documents.
Attend your appointment and pay €75
Arrive on time; being more than 15 minutes late means rebooking.
Wait for the decision
Processing takes at least about 4 weeks, and the visa is only issued within 3 months of your arrival date. Missing documents can be sent afterwards with your file number.
Register after you arrive
Register your address and book an appointment with the foreigners’ office to get your residence permit.
The limit is counted in days, so a part-time job spread across the year uses up half days quickly. A registered student job (Werkstudent) can allow up to 20 hours a week without counting against it. The minimum wage is planned to rise to €14.60 from January 2027.
After you graduate
You can stay 18 months to look for work that matches your qualification, working in any job meanwhile. With a matching offer you switch to a work permit or, for higher salaries, the EU Blue Card.
Germany intakes and deadlines
Main intake
Winter semester (October)
Most programmes start in October. Many universities close applications on 15 July; TUM’s Informatics window is 15 May to 15 July.
Second intake
Summer semester (April)
Fewer programmes start in April. Many universities close applications on 15 January.
Your preparation timeline
18 to 12 months before: Research courses, eligibility, funding and scholarship deadlines.
12 to 9 months before: Prepare language tests, transcripts, references and your shortlist.
9 to 6 months before: Submit applications by each programme’s actual deadline.
6 to 3 months before: Meet offer conditions, arrange funding and prepare visa documents.
3 to 1 months before: Apply for the visa and plan accommodation and arrival.
Keep these dates separate
A course start date, a uni-assist deadline, the university’s own deadline and your embassy appointment are separate dates. The embassy only issues visas within 3 months of your arrival date.
Degrees may be taught in German, English or both. Even on English-taught courses, basic German (A1 to A2) helps a lot, because housing, insurance and paperwork are usually in German.
German-taught courses
Usually TestDaF level 4 in each section or the DSH-2 certificate. The embassy recommends at least a good B1 result for German-taught study.
English-taught courses
Each university sets its own score, commonly IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80 to 90. The embassy asks for proof unless your bachelor’s was in Australia, the UK or the USA.
Often, at public universities, but not everywhere. Baden-Württemberg charges €1,500 a semester and some universities, such as TUM, charge non-EU students. Everyone pays a semester contribution and living costs.
How much must I put in the blocked account?
€11,904, which allows you to withdraw €992 a month for a year after arriving. A German government or EU-funded scholarship can replace it.
How long is the wait for a German student visa in Dhaka?
The embassy states more than 27 months for bachelor’s and master’s students without a German or EU scholarship, and warns the wait is hard to predict. PhD students and German or EU scholarship holders are processed right after registration. Weigh this against your intake before choosing Germany.
Is uni-assist the same as admission?
No. Uni-assist checks your documents first; you still need an admission letter from the university.
Can I appeal a refusal?
Since 1 July 2025 the remonstration procedure has been abolished. You can file a case at the administrative court in Berlin or submit a new application.
How much can I work?
140 full days or 280 half days a year, plus a registered student job of up to 20 hours a week in term.
Can I stay after graduating?
Yes, for up to 18 months to find a job matching your qualification, then switch to a work permit or EU Blue Card.
Can I start a bachelor’s straight after HSC?
Often not directly. Many universities ask Bangladeshi HSC holders to complete a Studienkolleg or a year of university study first. Check your exact case with the university or the DAAD.
