Your I-20 sets the number. Here is how to document it convincingly.

How much you must show
There is no single national figure. Each university sets a cost of attendance, tuition plus a year of living costs, and prints it on your I-20. Your bank and sponsor documents must cover that amount.
Documenting family funds
- Show balances built up over 6 to 12 months, not a recent lump sum.
- Include sponsor letters and income evidence, with official bank seals and letterhead.
- Scholarships and assistantships reduce what you must show; bring the award letter.
- Be ready to explain your family’s income at the interview.
