About the USA: highlights
The USA has the widest choice of universities and the most graduate funding of any destination, and STEM graduates can work for up to 3 years after graduating. The F-1 visa is decided at a short interview in Dhaka, so your study plan and funding evidence need to be clear.
Rough annual budget: about USD 40,000 to 65,000 at a public university and USD 60,000 to 95,000 at a private one, combining typical tuition with USD 1,200 to 2,500 a month in living costs.
Money to show: the full first-year cost printed on your I-20, which each university sets (tuition plus a year of living costs).
Visa costs: USD 185 visa fee plus the USD 350 SEVIS I-901 fee.
New in 2025 and 2026: F-1 applicants must set every social media account to public, and the DS-160 must be submitted more than 7 days before the interview.
After graduation: 12 months of OPT work authorisation, plus 24 more for STEM graduates with an E-Verify employer.
Visa outlook: Bangladesh is not on the January 2026 travel-restriction list, so F-1 processing continues; Bangladesh-specific refusal rates are not published.

If approved, your passport is returned with the visa through the embassy’s delivery process.
Travel on time
You can enter the USA up to 30 days before the programme start date on your I-20.
On-campus work only needs your school’s approval. Off-campus work needs separate permission: CPT, which must be part of your degree, or OPT. The federal minimum wage is USD 7.25, but most campus jobs pay more.
After you graduate
OPT gives 12 months of work after any degree; apply through USCIS well before graduating, as processing takes around 90 days. STEM graduates can add 24 months if their employer uses E-Verify.
US intakes and deadlines
Main intake
Fall (August / September)
The most programmes, scholarships and assistantships. Many universities close fall applications between December and February.
Second intake
Spring (January)
Offered by many universities for selected programmes, with fewer funding places. Check each department.
Your preparation timeline
18 to 12 months before: Research courses, eligibility, funding and scholarship deadlines.
12 to 9 months before: Prepare language tests, transcripts, references and your shortlist.
9 to 6 months before: Submit applications by each programme’s actual deadline.
6 to 3 months before: Meet offer conditions, arrange funding and prepare visa documents.
3 to 1 months before: Apply for the visa and plan accommodation and arrival.
Keep these dates separate
A course start date, an application deadline, an I-20 date and your visa interview date are four different milestones. EducationUSA recommends starting research 12 to 18 months ahead.
Most universities ask for IELTS 6.5 or the TOEFL or Duolingo equivalent, and competitive or graduate programmes often want 7.0 or more. Standardised test policies have been shifting, so check each programme.
Undergraduate
Many universities are test-optional for the SAT or ACT, but a strong score can still help with admission and merit awards.
Graduate
Some programmes require the GRE or GMAT and others waive it for strong academic records or relevant work experience.

Is Bangladesh affected by the 2026 US travel restrictions?
No. Bangladesh is not on either list in Proclamation 10998, which took effect on 1 January 2026, so F-1 student visa processing continues.
Does the new visa bond apply to students?
No. From 21 January 2026, Bangladeshi nationals approved for B1/B2 visitor visas must post a bond of up to USD 15,000. It does not apply to F-1 student visas.
Why are F-1 visas refused?
The most common reason is Section 214(b): the officer is not convinced you will return after your studies, or your funding looks like a recent lump sum rather than a steady balance.
How much money do I need to show?
The full first-year cost printed on your I-20, which your university sets. Show it with bank statements and sponsor documents that have official seals.
Do I really need to make my social media public?
Yes. The U.S. Embassy instructs F, M and J applicants to set all social media accounts to public to allow vetting.
Can I work in the USA as a student?
Up to 20 hours a week on campus during term and full time in breaks. Off-campus work needs CPT or OPT.
How long can I work after graduating?
12 months on OPT, and up to 36 months in total if you studied a designated STEM field and your employer uses E-Verify.
Can I apply to US universities after HSC?
Yes. US universities generally accept 12 years of schooling for a 4-year bachelor’s. Check each university’s test policy and English requirement.
