Study abroad after HSC

Your HSC is accepted directly in some countries and needs an extra year in others. Here is what universities publish.

HSC entry by destination

DestinationTypical route with HSCPublished example
CanadaDirect entryUBC accepts HSC as university-preparatory
MalaysiaDirect entryUniversiti Malaya accepts HSC
USADirect entry, holistic reviewASU reviews grades, English and experience
FinlandHSC is eligible; selection often by SAT or ACTAalto uses SAT/ACT for English-taught bachelor’s
UKFoundation year firstManchester: HSC 65% for INTO foundation, 80% for its integrated foundation
AustraliaOften foundation firstMelbourne does not list HSC as equivalent; Monash offers a foundation year
IrelandFoundation yearTrinity: HSC 70%, 50% in relevant subjects
GermanyStudienkolleg (2 semesters)TUM expects this unless uni-assist says otherwise
JapanLanguage school, then JLPT and EJUOr an English-taught programme
New ZealandAssessed by programmeAuckland assesses HSC individually

Count the extra year

A foundation year or Studienkolleg adds a year of fees and living costs before your degree starts. Compare total cost and years to graduation, not just annual tuition. A 4-year route through a foundation in the UK can cost more than direct entry in Malaysia or Canada.

A realistic timeline

  • Class XII: shortlist, check HSC rules for each university, and plan IELTS or SAT.
  • Before results: many universities make conditional offers on predicted or partial results; check each.
  • After results: meet the conditions, arrange funds and apply for the visa.
