Technical University of Munich: highlights
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is the highest-ranked university in the European Union: 25th in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Unlike most German public universities, TUM charges tuition to students from outside the EU, and Bangladeshi applicants face two extra hurdles covered below.
- After HSC: expect a 2-semester Studienkolleg before you can start a bachelor’s, unless uni-assist assesses your certificate otherwise.
- For a master’s in informatics: applicants with a degree from Bangladesh must submit GRE or GATE scores, with GRE Quantitative 164 and Analytical Writing 4.0 as the minimum.
- Tuition, non-EU: usually €2,000 or €3,000 a semester for a bachelor’s and €4,000 or €6,000 a semester for a master’s.
- Living costs: €1,300 to €2,000 a month in the Munich area.
- Visa wait: the German Embassy in Dhaka reports a wait of more than 27 months for bachelor’s and master’s applicants without a German or EU scholarship.
Key facts
Most bachelor’s degrees at TUM are taught in German. Many master’s degrees, including MSc Informatics, are taught in English.
TUM rankings
| Ranking | Position |
|---|---|
| QS World University Rankings 2027 | 25 in the world, 1st in the EU |
| Times Higher Education World University Rankings | 27 in the world, 1st in the EU |
| QS and THE subject rankings | Top 20 in the world in natural sciences and engineering |
Popular courses and non-EU tuition
TUM charges tuition per semester to students from outside the EU. The amount depends on the degree programme.
| Course | Length | Language | Non-EU tuition a semester |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSc Informatics | 6 semesters | German | €3,000 |
| Other bachelor’s degrees | 6 to 8 semesters | Mostly German | Usually €2,000 or €3,000 |
| MSc Informatics | 4 semesters | English | €6,000 |
| Other master’s degrees | Usually 4 semesters | English or German | Usually €4,000 or €6,000 |
Every student also pays a student services fee of €97 a semester. A 4-semester MSc Informatics costs €24,000 in tuition in total.
Admission requirements for Bangladeshi students
| Level | What TUM asks for |
|---|---|
| Bachelor’s with HSC | A Preliminary Documentation (VPD) from uni-assist. Where the certificate does not give direct access to German university study, a 2-semester Studienkolleg ending in the Feststellungsprüfung exam |
| Bachelor’s language | German at university level for German-taught degrees such as BSc Informatics |
| Master’s | A recognised bachelor’s degree in a related subject, assessed in TUM’s aptitude procedure |
| Master’s in the informatics family | GRE General or GATE if your degree is from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, China or Iran. Minimum GRE: Quantitative Reasoning 164 and Analytical Writing 4.0 |
| Master’s language | Proof of English for English-taught programmes; see the programme page for accepted tests |
After a Studienkolleg you submit a new application to TUM in the normal period. A Studienkolleg place is itself competitive and usually needs German at B1 or B2 level to start.
TUM: yearly intakes
TUM follows the German academic year, with a winter semester starting in October and a summer semester starting in April. Many programmes, including BSc Informatics, only admit for winter.
| Intake | Classes start | Apply by | Open for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter semester | October | BSc Informatics: 15 May to 15 July. MSc Informatics: 1 February to 31 May | All programmes |
| Summer semester | April | MSc Informatics: 1 October to 30 November | Some master’s programmes. BSc Informatics is not offered |
Because of the long visa wait in Dhaka, the semester you can actually start may be much later than the one you are admitted for. Ask TUM about deferring your place.
How to apply and key dates
- Get your VPD from uni-assist
Applicants with a non-German certificate need the Preliminary Documentation before applying to TUM. Allow several weeks.
- Take the GRE if your programme needs it
For MSc Informatics and related programmes, book the GRE early enough for scores to arrive within the application period.
- Apply in TUMonline within the period
Upload every required document before the period ends, or the application cannot be processed.
- Register for the visa as early as possible
Join the embassy’s waiting list on the Consular Services Portal straight away. Master’s applicants then submit at VFS and bachelor’s applicants at the embassy.
- Open a blocked account
Deposit at least €11,904 before your visa appointment.
| Programme | Winter semester (October start) | Summer semester (April start) |
|---|---|---|
| BSc Informatics | 15 May to 15 July | Not offered |
| MSc Informatics | 1 February to 31 May | 1 October to 30 November |
