Two ways to show financial capacity

Option 1: funds for 12 months

Enough money for travel, tuition and living costs for you and any family members for the first 12 months (or pro rata for shorter stays). The living-cost figure for one student is AUD 29,710 a year.

Option 2: annual income

Evidence of annual income above the amount Home Affairs sets, earned by your parents or spouse who are not travelling with you. Check the current figure in the Document Checklist Tool.

Example for option 1

Genuine access to funds

Home Affairs also checks that you will genuinely be able to use the money while in Australia. Funds should belong to you or your family, have a clear and legal source, and stay available. A sudden deposit, a loan you cannot explain, or money held by a distant relative raises questions.

  • Keep bank statements that show the balance building over time.
  • Include proof of the source, such as salary slips, business records or property sale deeds.
  • Education loans should come with the lender’s sanction letter and disbursement terms.
