Monash University: highlights
Monash is Australia’s largest university, with more than 80,000 students across its campuses, and a member of the Group of Eight. It reached 31st in the QS World University Rankings 2027, its best result so far. The main campus is at Clayton, in Melbourne’s south-east.
- After HSC: Monash assesses overseas school qualifications individually against Australian Year 12. If your HSC is not enough, the Monash University Foundation Year guarantees a place when you reach the required results.
- For a master’s: a bachelor’s degree with at least a credit (60%) average for the courses checked below.
- Tuition: AUD 57,540 to 63,040 a year for 2027.
- Scholarship: the International Merit Scholarship pays AUD 15,000 a year, with 20 awarded each year and no separate application.
- English: IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0.
- Living costs: Monash suggests AUD 30,000 to 45,000 a year for a single student.

English language scores
Most courses use Level A: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in listening, reading, writing and speaking. Documents not in English need certified translations.

Monash has two main intakes a year, and a few courses add a third. International students can apply at any time of year.

Graduate coursework applications generally open in early August and close in mid-June, with dates varying by faculty. Apply early if your course has limited places.
How to apply and key dates
- Pick your route
Direct entry, the Foundation Year, or a Monash College diploma that leads into the second year of some degrees.
- Apply online to Monash
International students apply directly or through a registered agent. Semester One starts in February and Semester Two in July.
- Receive a full offer
A full offer with no conditions also puts you in line for the International Merit Scholarship automatically.
- Accept, pay the deposit and arrange health cover
Monash then issues the Confirmation of Enrolment you need for the visa.
- Apply for the Student visa (subclass 500)
The visa fee is AUD 2,500. You show tuition, travel and AUD 29,710 in living costs for the first 12 months.

What one year costs in total
The first year of a Bachelor of Computer Science comes to about AUD 88,900 to 103,900: AUD 58,940 in tuition plus AUD 30,000 to 45,000 in living costs. The merit scholarship would take AUD 15,000 off that.

Possibly. Monash assesses overseas school qualifications one by one against Australian Year 12, so there is no single published HSC score. If your results fall short, the Monash University Foundation Year gives a guaranteed place once you reach the required marks.

You do not apply. Monash considers every international student who holds a full, unconditional bachelor’s offer and gives 20 awards a year, so it goes to the strongest academic records.
Can I do a Master of Data Science without an IT degree?
Yes. Monash offers a 2-year version for students without an IT background and a 1.5-year version for those with a related degree. Both need at least a credit (60%) average.
What IELTS score does Monash need?
IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 for most courses. The Foundation Year accepts 5.5 with no band below 5.0.
Is Monash Malaysia a cheaper way to get the same degree?
The Malaysia campus awards a Monash degree at a much lower cost, but you study under a Malaysian Student Pass. Malaysia’s post-study Graduate Pass does not currently list Bangladesh, so weigh the lower cost against the weaker work rights.
