University of Edinburgh: highlights

The University of Edinburgh is Scotland’s highest-ranked university, 35th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, and one of the world’s strongest for informatics and artificial intelligence. Scottish bachelor’s degrees take 4 years, one more than in England, which adds a year of fees and living costs.

  • After HSC: Applicants with the HSC or a polytechnic diploma are usually required to complete a foundation year. A levels and the IB give direct entry.
  • For a master’s: A 4-year bachelor’s degree from an approved institution with first-class grades or a GPA of 3.25. With a 3-year honours degree you also need a first-class master’s from Bangladesh.
  • Tuition: £31,100 to £40,900 a year for a bachelor’s and £47,680 for the MSc in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence or Data Science, for 2027-28 entry.
  • Fixed fees: International students on multi-year taught programmes pay a fixed annual fee based on their start date.
  • Intake: September.

Informatics master’s programmes are heavily oversubscribed, so apply in the first round you can.

    HSC students apply for a foundation year. A-level and IB students apply for the degree. Graduates apply for a master’s.

  2. Bachelor’s: apply through UCAS

    The UCAS fee for 2027 entry is £34.50 for up to 5 choices.

  4. Apply for the UK Student visa

    Use your CAS, a TB test certificate from an IOM clinic and 28 days of financial evidence.

Living costs in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is one of the more expensive UK cities outside London. As a guide, Study UK puts living costs outside London at about £900 to £1,300 a month.

For the visa you must show £1,171 a month for 9 months (£10,539) outside London, or £1,529 a month (£13,761) in London, on top of your first year of tuition. The figures rise to £1,203 and £1,570 for applications from 30 November 2026.

What one year costs in total

A one-year MSc in Computer Science comes to roughly £58,500 to £63,300: £47,680 in fees plus about £10,800 to £15,600 for 12 months of living costs.
