University of Oxford: highlights
The University of Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and ranks 4th in the QS World University Rankings 2027. It is also one of the hardest to enter: Oxford does not accept Bangladeshi school-leaving qualifications for its bachelor’s degrees, and its master’s courses expect the equivalent of a first-class degree.
- After HSC: Oxford lists Bangladesh’s school-leaving qualifications as not accepted. You need A levels, the IB or another accepted qualification.
- For a master’s: MSc Advanced Computer Science asks for a first-class degree with honours in computer science or mathematics, or its equivalent.
- Tuition: £39,620 to £66,580 a year for overseas bachelor’s students in 2027/28. MSc Advanced Computer Science is £46,350.
- Living costs: Oxford’s own estimate is £1,475 to £2,175 a month for 2027-28.
- English: Courses at the higher level need IELTS 7.5 with 7.0 in each component.
- Deadlines: Bachelor’s applications go through UCAS in mid-October, earlier than other UK universities. MSc Advanced Computer Science closes on 6 January 2027.
Key facts
Oxford is a collegiate university: you belong to a college as well as to your department, and the college provides accommodation, meals and small-group teaching. Undergraduates make up 47% of students and graduates 51%.
Oxford rankings
| Ranking | Position |
|---|---|
| QS World University Rankings 2027 | 4 in the world, 2nd in the UK |
Oxford sits just behind Imperial College London and ahead of Cambridge in the 2027 QS table.
Courses and overseas fees
Oxford publishes one overseas fee range for bachelor’s degrees and a separate fee on each graduate course page.
| Course | Length | Overseas fee a year |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor’s degrees (all subjects except clinical medicine) | 3 or 4 years | £39,620 to £66,580 (2027/28) |
| MSc Advanced Computer Science | 1 year | £46,350 |
Clinical medicine costs much more for overseas students. Fees usually rise each year for continuing students.
Admission requirements for Bangladeshi students
| Your qualification or level | What Oxford asks for |
|---|---|
| HSC | Not accepted. Oxford lists Bangladesh’s school-leaving qualifications as not accepted for bachelor’s entry |
| A levels | Accepted. Most courses ask for between A*A*A and AAA, plus an admissions test and interview |
| International Baccalaureate | Accepted at the score each course sets |
| Master’s | MSc Advanced Computer Science: a first-class bachelor’s degree with honours in computer science or mathematics, or the equivalent. Other courses set their own standard on the course page |
Meeting the minimum does not mean an offer. Oxford shortlists on grades, test scores and written work, then interviews.
English language scores
| Test or course | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Higher level (for example MSc Advanced Computer Science) | IELTS Academic 7.5 overall, 7.0 in each component |
| Standard level | Lower scores; see the course page |
Each graduate course page states whether it uses the standard or the higher level.
Oxford: yearly intakes
Oxford has one intake a year. The academic year starts in October, and almost no course admits at any other time.
| Intake | Classes start | Apply by | Open for |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 2027, bachelor’s | October 2027 | UCAS in mid-October 2026, months before other UK universities | All bachelor’s degrees |
| October 2027, graduate | October 2027 | MSc Advanced Computer Science: 12:00 midday UK time on 6 January 2027. Other courses have December, January or March deadlines | Master’s and DPhil courses |
Graduate funding is decided from the applications received by the December or January deadline, so apply by then even if your course has a later deadline.
How to apply
- Check your qualification
With HSC alone you cannot apply for a bachelor’s. Plan for A levels or the IB, or apply at master’s level after your degree.
- Bachelor’s: apply through UCAS by the October deadline
Most courses also need an admissions test, and shortlisted applicants are interviewed in December.
- Graduate: apply on Oxford’s own form
Submit transcripts, references, a statement and any written work by the course deadline.
- Complete the financial declaration
You confirm you can pay the fees and at least the lower living-cost figure before your place is confirmed.
- Apply for the UK Student visa
Use your CAS, a TB test certificate from an IOM clinic and 28 days of financial evidence.
