About New Zealand: highlights

New Zealand offers open post-study work rights and, since November 2025, up to 25 hours of work a week while studying. It is a smaller destination for Bangladeshi students, so plan your funding evidence carefully and expect a chest X-ray as part of the visa.

  • Rough annual budget: about NZD 55,000 to 80,000 a year, combining typical bachelor’s tuition of NZD 35,000 to 55,000 with living costs of NZD 20,000 to 27,000.
  • Money to show: NZD 20,000 a year for living costs (or NZD 1,667 a month for shorter courses), plus your tuition and a return airfare.
  • Visa cost: NZD 850 in total for the fee-paying student visa.
  • Work while studying: up to 25 hours a week if your visa allows it, and full time in scheduled breaks.
  • After graduation: a Post-Study Work Visa of 1 to 3 years, with 3 years after a bachelor’s degree or higher, for almost any employer.
  • Health check: Bangladesh is not a low-TB country, so you need a chest X-ray certificate less than 3 months old.

New Zealand intakes and deadlines

Main intake

Semester One (late February / March)

The most courses and scholarships. Auckland’s 2027 Semester One starts on 1 March.

Second intake

Semester Two (July)

Widely available at universities. Auckland’s 2027 Semester Two starts on 19 July.

Your preparation timeline

  1. 18 to 12 months before: Research courses, eligibility, funding and scholarship deadlines.
  2. 12 to 9 months before: Prepare language tests, transcripts, references and your shortlist.
  3. 9 to 6 months before: Submit applications by each programme’s actual deadline.
  4. 6 to 3 months before: Meet offer conditions, arrange funding and prepare visa documents.
  5. 3 to 1 months before: Apply for the visa and plan accommodation and arrival.

Keep these dates separate

A course start date, a scholarship deadline and your visa lodgement are separate dates. Auckland’s excellence scholarship needs an offer by 20 October 2026 for a 2027 start.

English tests and exams

Most university degrees ask for IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5 to 6.0. Nursing, teaching and law often set higher scores linked to professional registration.

For admission

Auckland’s Bachelor of Science, for example, uses a baseline of IELTS 6.0 with 5.5 in each band. Check your own programme’s policy.

Professional subjects

A professional body’s English requirement can differ from the university’s general requirement. Check both before booking a test.
